A recent study report on Cancer is on debate in medical circles now.The report on causes of human cancer, published in the journal Science says that only a third of the variation in cancer risk among tissues is attributable to environmental factors or inherited predispositions. The majority is due to “bad luck,” that is, random mutations arising during DNA replication in normal, noncancerous stem cells. This is important not only for understanding the disease but also for designing strategies to limit the mortality it causes. But there is a strong disagreement from the Cancer Research organizations on this finding. The International Agency for Research on Cancer ,the World Health Organization's specialized Cancer Agency strongly disagrees with this scientific report. IARC experts point to a serious contradiction with the extensive body of epidemiological evidence as well as a number of methodological limitations and biases in the analysis presented in the report.
“The past five decades of international epidemiological research have shown that most cancers that are frequent in one population are relatively rare in another and that these patterns vary over time. For example, oesophageal cancer is common among men in East Africa but rare in West Africa. Colorectal cancer, once rare in Japan, increased four fold in incidence in just two decades. These observations are characteristic of many common cancers and are consistent with a major contribution of environmental and lifestyle exposures, as opposed to genetic variation or chance (“bad luck”).”says the IARC clarification.Any way, hope these debates on cancer will move in to positive directions in medical industry.

Carl Jung

by Deepthi T N

Carl Gustav Jung was a famous psychiatrist and psychotherapist who founded the school of analytical psychology. He was a multifaceted personality with interests in fields as diverse as medicine, religion, literature, philosophy, archeology and occult. He had a difficult childhood as his mother suffered from depression and was extremely moody. He was an introverted child and suffered from multiple personality disorder—this incident had a profound influence on his future career as a psychiatrist. Another childhood incident which shaped his career was when he was pushed to the ground by a classmate which led to his having fainting spells throughout his childhood. His simultaneous interests in the field of medicine and spiritual phenomena led him to choose psychiatry which he considered a combination of both these fields. He made immense contributions to his chosen field and gave the world some of the best known psychological concepts like analytical psychology, personality profiling, collective unconscious, the complex, etc. He was once a close associate of Sigmund Freud and both the men influenced each other intellectually and attended several conferences together. Jung's important theories include the concept of introversion and extraversion, the archetypes and synchronicity. He was a prolific writer who published his work in 19 volumes and continued writing till the end of his life.

FDA Approves Oral Suspension for the Treatment of Parkinson's Disease

by Bose R C

The US Food and Drug Administration had given permission to market oral suspension Duopa (carbidopa and levodopa), a product of  AbbVi; US. This product is intended to treat motor fluctuations in patients with advanced Parkinson's disease.Parkinson’s disease is a chronic and progressive disorder affecting the brain cells due to the lack of dopamine production. This disorder affects the patient's movement, and in advanced cases, Parkinson’s disease may fluctuate between “on time” and “off time,” in which they experience rigidity, poor mobility to move, and slowness.  In patients with  Parkinson’s disease, emptying of the stomach is unpredictable, making the management of the disease difficult with conventional dosage form. Duopa can overcome this problem by delivering the active ingredients directly into the small intestine via a tube placed by a percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy procedure with jejunal extension. The approval of the drug was based on the phase-3 multicenteric clinical trial. The efficacy and safety of Duopa were compared with those of oral carbidopa-levodopa IR tablets in patients with advanced Parkinson’s disease. The result showed that, Duopa reduced the “off” time and improved “on” time significantly, when compared with the comparator, at 12 weeks by 4 hours. The patient had the problem with insertion of the device. Adverse events experienced by patients treated with Duopa were, nausea, constipation, incision site erythema, dyskinesia, depression, post procedural discharge, peripheral edema, hypertension, upper respiratory tract infection, oropharyngeal pain, atelectasis, confusional state, anxiety, dizziness, and hiatal hernia.
