Recently the researchers team of University of Illinois,Chicago led by Prof. Wonhwa Cho were in search for new cholestrol binding protiens, which lead them to a finding of another binding site for cholestrol located on a protien named "Dishevelled". This protien is responsible of canonical wnt signalling and non-canonical wnt signalling, which are also called as the pathways that promotes cell growth and division.
In mature cells, it is found that these pathways are directly resposible for the cancer development.Cholestrol has an ability to bind with the protien Dishevelled,Cholestrol serves as a potential determinents that activates the wnt signalling pathways, that encourages cell growth and division. It was found that cholestrol supports canonical wnt signalling more than non-canonical wnt signalling , which may increase cancer risk.
