Drinking alcohol for short term does not have much of the problems. If one drink too much alcohol for the long period of time, can put the health at risk. There can be lots of hidden harmful effects on the health, that may not become apparent until many years.
Men are recommended to drink not more than 3-4 units a day and women are designed to take not more than 2-3 units a day.
Chances of cancer
Drinking more units than the safe limits as recommended can lead to various health conditions. Excessive consumption of alcohol can cause many neurological conditions such as depression and epilepsy. If you drink and smoke, you are likely to get cancer up to 50 times more than someone who never smokes and drinks alcohol.
Effect on heart circulation
Drinking too much alcohol regularly, damages the heart and increases the risk of developing heart disease and stroke. Damages the heart rhythm and heart muscle
Risk to the liver
Alcohol surely damages the liver. The major functions of the liver are to filter and clean the blood. The Liver takes about one hour to break down one unit of alcohol. During this process the liver tissues are continuously getting destroyed.
Effect on reproductive life:
Men and women drinking regularly, more than the daily recommended unit, is known to affect their fertility in women, it can disrupt ovulation and menstrual cycles which can make them infertile.
Where as in men, it can cause loss of sexual desire and affect sperm production due to reduced testosterone levels.
Nervous system and Alcohol
Heavy consumption of alcohol regularly can lead to brain and nerve damage, leading to memory problems, dementia. This is majorly caused due to lack of vitamin B1 absorption, if left untreated, lead to permanent memory loss.
