Brain Lacks Nucleotide Excision Repair Factors, A DNA Repairing Factor

A recent research study found that brain cell cannot repair its damaged DNA. This research work was led by Nova Southeastern University, Fort Lauderdale and this study were published in the journal Photochemistry and Photobiology.Previously, it was believed that, repairing of damaged DNA was same at all parts of the body, but this study proved otherwise. The study was done to investigate the distribution of two nucleotide excision repair (NER) factors,  the protein xeroderma pigmentosum group A and B, on various part of the brain. The research team used rat brain and observed using immunohistochemistry and triple fluorescent immunostaining combined with confocal microscope. The team found that there were no stains of NER factor in the brain and hence confirmed the inability of the brain to carry out this vital type of DNA repairing activity through this pathway. The lead investigator Jean Latimer, associate professor of pharmaceutical sciences at the College of Pharmacy at NSU, and colleagues explained that this could be because brain are usually not exposed to any major DNA damage. The brain cells focus their energies on more essential functions and  it does not prioritize DNA repair. These findings has open new opportunity to understand the root cause of dementia and memory loss.
