Pollution is always a much talked subject. But some recent studies reveal that it is deadly as an epidemic.According to the World Health Organization, indoor and outdoor air pollution is responsible for 7 million premature deaths an year—one-eighth of global mortality. Outdoor air pollution, by itself, accounts for 2.7 million deaths and indoor air pollution 3.3 million, while 1 million deaths are caused by a combination of outdoor and indoor pollution. Pollution kills because people inhale particulates small enough to penetrate their lungs and bloodstream, increasing the prevalence, for example, of cardiovascular and respiratory conditions.Nearly 90 percent of the outdoor pollution deaths occur in densely populated, low- and middle-income countries, particularly in the western Pacific and Southeast Asia. The costs of health damage caused by outdoor air pollution vary considerably, depending on the country and type of fossil fuel being burned. The cooking places in poor and underdeveloped countries cause deaths. This can be reduced by Cleaner fuels and improved technologies. Development and technology plays a key role in reducing indoor pollution rates. Outdoor pollution are much noticed and efforts are there for a cleaner environment. But the message is that more attention is needed for eradication of indoor pollution.

Why you should not wash your face with hot water

by Anagha Mahesh

Washing your face can definitely cause a lot of damage to your skin but you never notice this fact while washing it with hot water. Skin on your face can put you at risk of acne, dry skin, large and visible pores etc.Hot water irritates the skin: Did you ever know that there are more pores and openings on your face than any other part of your body. There are other factors that make your skin vulnerable to extreme temperatures. A sensitive skin condition called rosacea can cause problems related to skin such as flare-ups in patients who have very sensitive skin.Strips your skin of natural oils, that makes it dry: Water that is excessively hot can strip off natural and healthy oils from your skin quickly and makes it more and more dry. You could very well tackle this condition by applying moisturiser or cream. The overuse of hot water can lead to production of collagen and sebum and thus can lead to early ageing. Your facial skin gets hampered when you wash it with hot water and the fine lines appears on your skin much before they are actually supposed to appear. It might scald your skin: your pores are delicate and it cannot withstand extreme temperatures and finally you would end up scalding your skin and large, visible pores. The temperature of the water that use depends on what you actually feel comfortable with.

Alfred Adler

by Deepthi T N

Alfred Adler was a celebrated physician and psychotherapist who contributed greatly to the sphere of human psychological science. He is the founding father of the school of Individual psychological science that considers every creature as a private whole. He developed a holistic approach to the study of a human psychological science, taking under consideration the general surroundings the person is related to. His ways greatly influenced the counseling and medical specialty methods developed within the twentieth century. The extremely acclaimed doctor had set quite early in life that he needed to pursue health profession. Bouts with a series of childhood diseases and also the loss of a brother at a young age motivated  him to become a physician. He started his career as associate degree medical specialist however presently switched to general practice. During the course of his work he came into contact with the celebrated scientist Sigmund Freud with whom he discussed ideas and opinions. However, the two great public men's ideas often conflicted and Adler broke away from Freud and started a freelance faculty of psychotherapy, The Adlerian faculty, whose main premise was the Individual psychological science.  He was the first psychiatrist to understand the significance of the environment in molding a human being's personality. He believed that the inferiority complex of individuals plays an important role in personality development.

New Discovery: Gene therapy for Spinal Muscular Atrophy

by Bose R C

Research on Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) treatment is at it's exciting and critical stage.  AveXis, Inc., a biotechnology company is about to introduce a gene therapy for SMA,  as remarkable advances have been made in recent years. Spinal Muscular Atrophy is a genetic muscle wasting disorder caused due to the mutated or malfunctioning survival motor neuron 1 gene (SMN1) on the 5th chromosome. SMA is an orphan disease affecting approximately 1 in every 6,000-10,000 children born. There are four main types of SMA classified as (Type I, II, III and IV). The present therapy is focused to treat SMA type-I, which is the most common amongst the 4. The new treatment approach is to introduce fully functioning copies of an SMN gene into the body that can produce the missing protein. The most interesting aspect of this treatment is that, the transfer of the fully functional gene is done by a mediator virus. The SMN gene remains as an extrachromosomal form, that means, it will not integrate with the cellular genome. But, SMN protein will be continuously produced by the cell, from the new copies of the introduced SMN gene. Priorto starting the Phase 1 clinical trial, new gene therapy, has received IND approval and Fast Track designation from the FDA in September 2013. It was also granted as orphan drug by the FDA Office. In preclinical studies, the drug has been found to cross the blood-brain-barrier also. The subjects were given a single viral intravenous infusion followed by careful monitoring for three weeks at weekly intervals and the latter will be monitored monthly. With this clinical trial now under way for new therapies and biomarkers has developed hope, that SMA might become one of the first genetic neurological disorders that can be treated successfully.
